New morning routines

My early morning coffee ritual is very much in flux these days. I still wake up way before dawn. Some things never change.

I used to really enjoy reading The Washington Post on my Kindle. It was such a lovely experience. Even when the world stared going to shit, at least the user experience on the app was easy, fell into the background. I enjoyed the word puzzles, there and the NY Times.

I am a big reader, and my Kindle was filled with books I loved to read over and over, and a to-read pile that I loved to just browse. My own personal library that I carried everywhere.

I would browse Facebook there as well because it was convenient. A larger screen than my phone which my old eyes appreciate. There are many communities there that became a big part of my life. I started the Icelandic Chicken group in 2009! I watched my Icelandic Sheepdogs grow up over these years, keeping up with their families as well.

I’ve canceled my WP subscription of course  now that Bezos has gone off the deep right end. I wish he had never bought it. I don’t use my Kindle anymore. I stay off FB except once a week to check messages.

The habit of little daily updates and photos are going to BlueSky where I am both meeting new people and finding my people. That is also where I am getting my news. It still feels like the home of the resistance, one of the blue bubbles left online.

The news is awful though so I am really limiting my doomscrolling. I am keeping busy outside. I am cooking. I am still struggling to heal from this last wrist surgery so am so limited in what I can do though.

  1. I’m @karenmicah68 on bsky. I enjoy seeing your updates there with the pups and kittens and all the critters.

I cancelled my NYT sub a while back; I’ve cancelled my Amazon prime account, and will no longer buy any Kindle books. I have used Thriftbooks and Better World Books for a while now anyway.

I hope your wrist heals up for you soon. I broke mine two summers ago, and although it was a very simple break that didn’t need surgery, it still took at least a year to get back to “normal” and I still have twinges now and then and it aches when I over do things. Or possibly when the barometric pressure makes a sudden change. 🙂
